#5121 Gala Silk Scarf
#5121 Gala Silk Scarf
Wartime conditions during the Vietnam conflict and civil war nearly extinguished traditional weaving in Cambodia's villages. Many master weavers who knew the ancient ways were lost in the conflict. Few survivors of the genocide had the resources or deep knowledge required to cultivate the silk and produce the very fine silk thread for traditional weavings. Efforts to revive the beautiful Khmer silk weaving came through the work of international non-governmental organizations and concerned individuals and groups who built workshops and provided training, materials and tools. Over time much progress has been made. This colorful silk shawl is the product of such a partnership between France and Cambodia. It is woven in the traditional 2:1 twill ground using two different colored threads, red and orange, creating a "shot" silk that is iridescent. The full bodied hand of this scarf helps your rolls and folds stay in place to best advantage. Your purchase supports this essential work preserving a future for Cambodian textile arts.
