NA379.1 Ebony and Kheelek Dyed Silk Shawl
The Complicated process of obtaining color from natural materials and the resulting beauty is epitomized by this bold original piece from Naenna Studio. Ebony berries are gathered in the villages and kept in large vats until needed for greys, browns and blacks. The results are colorfast to both light and washing. Annatto from the Lipstick tree’s small seeds make cosmetics, seasonings and this gorgeous golden mango color on the edges of the ikat shapes. The resist process of patterning fabric is ancient as threads are tied into bundles to create the diamonds and dots of this distinguished pattern. The resist process of patterning fabric begins with the weft threads which are tied into bundles. Once dyed, and the ties are released, the diamond and dots of this distinguished design emerge.
