Shimmering silk patterned "matmee" ikat in glorious hues illuminate the charms of this part of Thailand. My forty years of travels has taken me to incredible weaving villages where women artisans participate in the everyday flow of village life, feeding the monks, working in the rice fields, preparing the meals, maintaining a small garden then weaving and dyeing when the silk is ready the water plenty and the dye stuff is in season. Productive weavers skilled in the textile arts handed down from mother to daughter provide important revenue for their families and create a means of self sufficiency. Khmer ethnic weavers surrounded by their magnificent ancient monuments and temples where the rituals of animism and Buddhism thrive today have long inhabited this part of Thailand. Textile work such as this is intricately connected to their culture and its ultimate expression.
