KT8014 Silk Ceremonial Skirt Pha Sin Lao
Kongthong Nanthavongduangsy, one of the leading weavers in Laos, exhibits her mastery of all the important techniques from the Sam Neua weaving repertoire inthis outstanding silk weaving. Kongthong learned weaving at her mother's side and is an acclaimed textile artist and supporter of Lao artisans. Her piece shows supplementary threads forming flowers and other flora in a wonderful mix of lively colors and traditional Lao motifs. All motifs have symbolic significance: diamond shapes are eyes to ward off evil spirits; the star flower brings luck and prosperity; the Naga brings fertility and protection and spinning tools recognize the the creativity of Lao people. The Naga is largely favored in the central section showing us its scales and hooded incarnation. Native natural dyes such as lac red produced by a native insect, indigo, golds and green impart a symphony of deep and varied hues. The "flowing water" tapestry area pays homage to the importance of water in feeding the rice fields and the Lao people. Dash-like stripes in red lac ikat contain the tapestry area and give us the third important technique in Lao weaving, resist dyed "mudmee" ikat patterning. Such an exceptional phasin is worn at special temple ceremonies and represents the best in Lao textile accomplishments.
