LM473.1 Lao Silk "Pha Phai" Shoulder Cloth
LM473.1 Lao Silk "Pha Phai" Shoulder Cloth
This splendid contemporary textile from Xam Tai, Laos is unique in concept and artistry. The designer Kintong Xayalath proposes wearing it on the head instead of the shoulders for special ceremonies and shared these other thoughts about its meanings. The ancestral figures dominating the piece is a woman she calls Hong Nang. She is very strong and capable, choosing not to marry. In the local temple where she stays she's known as wise, powerful and a good counsel. Rural weavers are empowered by their accomplishments at the loom. This outstanding design works visually on many levels as images come forward and recede transforming and awakening our perceptions. Intrigue and mystery enchant us with the figure standing on the Naga Boat surrounded by naga protectors and flower gardens with rainbows connecting us to the spiritual world. The iconography is mixed animist and Buddhist cosmology favored by the Lao and represents their strongly held belief system. The Naga Boat serves to transport ill-serving spirits out and to bring good ones back. Just what the world needs now. Many weavers in Laos are struggling as they endure yet another lockdown with the pandemic. We send our heartfelt gratitude for the beauty they bring to our lives and hope for their health and for a prosperous future. Please help us help them today.
