LM349 Pha Tuum Shoulder Wrap
LM349 Pha Tuum Shoulder Wrap
The supplementary weaving in this magnificent giant spirit pattern in dark indigo brings protection to the wearer. In the Xam Tai region of Laos young girls must complete a body of weaving indicating know-how in the textile arts to prepare for marriage. The pha tuum holds and carries a baby guarded by the ferocious phii nyak ancestoral figures that dominate the textile. The intricacy of the supplementary design is outstanding in this piece and it is further distinguished by the use of silk threads in the warp and the weft unlike most pieces where white cotton is used. At the zone-dyed red hem a colorful brocade area with mythological figures enhances the overall work. A carefully executed repair has been made across the right panel 4" from the top of this vintage piece.
